Hitchcock introduces Daniels Brenner's mother Lydia as well as Suzanne Pleshette as his previous partner Annie, long before the action occurs. The suspense level is raised due to Hitchcock spending time to establish the relationship between these two characters. There are memorable minor roles performed by Jessica Tandy as Brenner's mother, Lydia, and by Suzanne Pleshette as his former girlfriend, Annie. Evan Hunter is better known by his pseudonym Ed McBain. He adapted the novella of Daphne Du Maurier into screenplay. Hitchcock created a great film by using electronic sounds instead of music. Hitchcock examined a real-life case of a shearwater attack that was sooty at Capitola, Calif. in 1961. The birds were believed to have been aggressive because they had consumed poisoned anchovies with diatoms.
